Volunteer Spotlight: Bob Page

Volunteer Spotlight: Bob Page

Rebecca Gemmell14 Apr - 12:40

A legacy of service and spirit at Felixstowe Rugby Club

For the past seven years, Bob Page has been a cornerstone of the Felixstowe Rugby Club's volunteer community. His journey into volunteering began with a simple desire—to stay purposeful and engaged after stepping back from full-time work. But what started as a small act of service quickly evolved into something much deeper.

Encouraged by other dedicated volunteers, Bob soon joined the club's Facilities Development Group, an ambitious team formed to oversee the planning and delivery of essential infrastructure projects like new floodlights and a clubhouse. These developments weren’t just about bricks and mortar—they were about laying the foundation for the club’s long-term sustainability. But for Bob, the magic of volunteering lies not only in the projects but in the people.

"Without doubt, the incredible and diverse group of people who turn up week in, week out without any reward other than love of the game, community spirit and a sense of service," he reflects.

Over the years, Bob has cultivated a strong network of genuine friendships, learned the art of funding applications, and collaborated with local councillors and sports professionals to raise the club’s profile in the wider community. His role expanded far beyond expectation—but perhaps the most defining moment of his service came with a request from a dear friend.

“My predecessor as Club President, Steve Spraggett, asked me to take on his role while he was suffering a terminal illness. I initially declined, daunted by the prospect of following such a club icon. Steve, ever humble and cryptic, replied, ‘OK, I have a solution… you take my place and I’ll carry on!’”

That touching exchange marked the beginning of Bob’s presidency—a role he accepted with deep humility, immense pride and a sense of duty to his friend. Since then, he has led with the same spirit of service that inspired his own journey, helping shape the culture and future of Felixstowe Rugby Club.

Bob is a strong believer in the power of volunteering and encourages others to step forward, no matter how small their contribution may seem. “Every single volunteer has value to offer—skills, knowledge, and experience they may not even realize they have. Enthusiasm and a desire to contribute will bring you into a wonderful community.”

He is quick to acknowledge the essential role volunteers play in the life of the club:
“Without volunteers, there is no club. They are the bedrock of everything—from governance and fundraising to the day-to-day running. Only then can our players pull on the shirt and represent Felixstowe on the field.”
Despite life’s demands, Bob sees the club as a place where people lift each other up.
“The rugby club is a mutually supportive entity. We find time for each other and for our community.”

His leadership, dedication, and love for the sport embody the very values that Felixstowe Rugby Club holds dear. As he puts it: “Our club heritage and rugby values underpin a continuum of friendship, mutual support and a healthy dose of humour that is unique to our chosen sport—long may it continue.”

Looking back, Bob considers it a true privilege to have served as Club President.
“It has been a unique honour to work with our volunteers, players, and community representatives to contribute to the ongoing success of our rugby club.”

Words from the Club
To celebrate Rob’s incredible contributions, we also reached out to a few fellow members of the club. Here’s what they had to say:

Bob has played a truly special role in the growth and ongoing success of Felixstowe Rugby Club. His leadership, encouragement, and unwavering support have touched the lives of so many, both on and off the pitch. Under his guidance as President, the club has gone from strength to strength — and it's safe to say he leaves us in a far better place than when he arrived. Bob will be deeply missed, but we know this isn’t goodbye. We’re looking forward to seeing him back on the sidelines when he visits, cheering on the Badgers — and no doubt there’ll be plenty of friends lining up to buy him a well-earned drink. - Rob Brewster, Chairman

Bob has been a totem for Felixstowe rugby and a leader like no other. An outstanding bridge builder who sets the big picture, sees all the detail & brings people in with ease. An exceptional communicator, administrator & influencer. Top man. - Mike Bowden
